Bungartz

A historic German maker (Bungartz & Co., Munich, founded 1934 by Dr. Everhard Bungartz); specialised in soil cultivation with rotating tools for horticulture and viticulture, building single-axle tractors such as the L5 before moving to four-wheel machines. A heritage collector’s marque.

Bungartz & Co., Munich's rotary tiller specialist

Bungartz & Co. was founded in Munich on 1 April 1934. The Dutch Bungartz club records that the company took over Siemens patents and manufacturing for rotary tillers (Bodenfräsen), and that its focus was on rotating soil-cultivation tools for horticulture, fruit growing and viticulture.

The L5 single-axle tractor was delivered from 1953 as the successor to the U1. The Bungartz tractor era ended in 1974, when the company sold its municipal and vineyard tractor production to Gutbrod. On 1 June 1974 the complete spare parts service was acquired by Holter Maschinenhandel in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock.

Since the Bungartz tractor era ended in 1974, any L5 you find is a used or collector purchase. Ask how much of the machine is original, which parts have been replaced and with what, and whether the rotary tiller and other implements come with it, since the tiller was the point of the design. Have the seller start it from cold and run the tiller under load. Budget time and money for finding wear parts, and treat a machine with gaps in its history as a restoration project rather than a working tool.
