Rotavator hire: costs, hire vs buy, and where to hire
If you only need to break ground once, hiring a rotavator can save you a few hundred pounds and a winter of storage. Here's what it costs, when hiring makes sense, and where to find a machine near you.
What does it cost to hire a rotavator?
Prices depend on the machine's size and the firm, but independent hire yards give a clear picture. A mid-size (~5 hp) petrol rotavator is typically around £40–£50 a day, with a weekend cheaper than two separate days and a full week often £75–£100. Most hire firms quote excluding VAT, so as a private customer add roughly 20%.
| Hire firm (example) | Machine | Day | Weekend | Week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wellers Hire | 5 hp rotavator | £41.25 | £48.75 | £75.00 |
| Fosseway Hire | Cultivator / rotavator | from £50 | — | from £100 |
| Lister Wilder | Cultivator | from £50 | — | — |
Published rates exclude VAT, sampled July 2026 — always confirm the current price, deposit and fuel terms with your branch. National chains such as HSS Hire and Speedy don't list flat online rates; ask for a branch quote. Lighter cultivators and peer-to-peer rentals can cost less — around £18–£30 a day.
Hire or buy? The honest answer
It comes down to how often you'll use it. With hire at roughly £40–£50 a day (plus VAT), a one-off job — breaking a new vegetable patch, levelling for a lawn — is far cheaper hired than bought.
But hire fees add up. If you'll cultivate every spring, a £250–£400 petrol tiller pays for itself in a handful of weekends, and you can work the moment the soil is ready rather than booking a slot. For most allotment holders who garden seriously, buying wins; for a single landscaping job, hiring does. If you're leaning towards buying, start with our buying guide.
Which size should you hire?
Match the machine to the job. For a small garden or tidying established beds, a light cultivator or mini rotavator is easier to handle, fits a car more readily and costs less. For breaking a new lawn or vegetable plot, a mid-size 5 hp petrol rotavator has the weight to bite in. For compacted clay or large, rough ground, ask for a heavy-duty or rear-tine machine — and check it fits your car, or pay for delivery.

Before you book
- Confirm the day/weekend/weekly rate, deposit and whether fuel is included.
- Check the machine's weight and size against your car — or pay for delivery.
- Match the machine to the job: a light cultivator won't break compacted clay.
- Book ahead in spring; demand peaks when everyone wants to dig at once.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a rotavator?
It depends on size and firm. For a mid-size (~5 hp) petrol rotavator, independent hire yards typically charge about £40–£50 a day, £48–£55 for a weekend and £75–£100 a week — usually quoted excluding VAT, so a private customer should add roughly 20%. Lighter cultivators and peer-to-peer rentals can be £18–£30 a day. National chains like HSS and Speedy don't publish flat online rates; ask a branch for a quote. Always confirm the deposit and fuel terms before you book.
Is it better to hire or buy a rotavator?
Hire if you'll break ground once or twice and then maintain it by hand — you avoid the purchase cost, storage and maintenance. Buy if you'll cultivate every season: a mid-range tiller pays for itself against a few years of hire fees, and it's there whenever the soil and weather are right.
Do I need a car to collect a hired rotavator?
Often, yes — many consumer tillers fit in a hatchback with the seats down, but larger machines need a van or trailer. Several hire firms offer delivery for a fee, which is worth it for anything heavy. Check weight and dimensions before you set off.
What should I check when I collect a hire machine?
Confirm it starts and runs, the tines are intact, and you understand the controls and the stop. Ask about fuel (some come dry), the deposit, damage terms and the return time. Take a photo of any existing marks so you're not charged for them.
