HBM Machines

HBM Machines is a long-established Dutch tools and machinery distributor founded in 1972 in Gouda, now trading from Moordrecht/Waddinxveen across the Benelux, Germany, France, Austria, Spain and Italy. Its grondfrees line is generic-import hardware sold under the HBM badge alongside a much wider tools catalogue, making it a bigger and older operation than most single-product tiller importers in this niche.

HBM Machines, from a Gouda tools shop to Gouwe Park

HBM grew out of a household-goods and tools shop that the founder opened in Gouda in 1959. From 1972 the founder's son ran it alone. The company's name, Herman Buitelaar Gereedschapshandel, later gave way to the brand name HBM, standing for Herman Buitelaar Machines.

In October 1999 the business moved to Kanaaldijk in Waddinxveen, and in 2011 into newly built premises at Gouwe Park. In 2019 the family sold its majority shares in the company, which then had 110 employees. A former owner has said he spent a month a year in China buying and visiting factories. Our catalogue lists one HBM tiller, the 6.5 PK 196cc grondfrees.

For a buyer, treat an HBM tiller as you would any imported machine sold under a retailer's badge: read the engine and gearbox details on the label, ask where spare parts come from and how long they are kept, and compare it with similar tillers sold under other names before you pay.
