Tomos

A Slovenian maker from Koper (est. 1954), best known for mopeds but also the UMO two-stroke motokultivatori — a popular Yugoslav-era alternative to IMT, sharing many parts. Discontinued, and common on regional used markets.

Tomos: mopeds, small machines and the end in Koper

Tomos, short for Tovarna motornih koles Sežana, dates from 1954, when the factory first planned for Sežana was built in Koper instead. Production first centred on 50 cc two-stroke engines for mopeds, pumps and small agricultural machines. Moped assembly began in 1955 under licence from Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and the company went on to develop its own models in the 1960s. Over the decades the Koper factory built a range that ran from mopeds to small agricultural machinery.

After a bankruptcy in 1989, Tomos was taken over by Splošna Banka Koper, and in April 1998 it became part of Holding Hidria. The Koper court later declared the company bankrupt, which RTV Slovenija reported on 3 January 2019. An exhibition at the Technical Museum of Slovenia presents the company's original founding documents, technical plans and archive material.

For a buyer, a Tomos tiller such as the UMO-08 is a used purchase with no maker behind it. Before paying, check that the engine starts and runs cleanly, that the gears engage, and that the seller can point you to a source for wear parts.

Tomos UMO-08

Petrol · Front-tine · width varies

The Tomos UMO is the two-stroke motokultivator from Tomos of Koper, Slovenia (the moped maker) — a popular Yugoslav-era alternative to the IMT machines, with which it shares many components. The two-stroke petrol engine is documented in type, but the exact UMO-08 power output, working width and weight are not, so power and dimensions are left unstated and the record is flagged.
